Donate Your Boat – The Company

Donate Your Boat has been in operations since 2004 and was birthed from a need to create opportunities of advancement for young urban families who are facing greater challenges in America.  Poverty is something that stretches across every demographic of person and every community.  Children in America go to bed without food while mothers and fathers are finding it difficult to provide for the very basic needs of their families.  The next generation, our youth and children, are experiencing greater challenges and a shortfall of mentors who will train them up and an educational system (especially in urban contexts) which is struggling to adequately prepare these children is not helping them overcome those challenges.

Your partnership with Donate Your Boat through your charitable boat donation (or other vehicle) allows us together to make a difference.  We operate our organization based on a core set of values that include placing a high value on human life which means we operate with great integrity and concern for you the donor and the needs of those we mention above.  When you donate to us you can be sure we will maximize to the best of our ability the impact of your boat donation in the lives of those that need it most.

Frequently Asked Boat Donation Questions

How long does the process take?

Every situation is a little bit different and we address each situation uniquely. The process can take a few days, as in the case when we have a local representative to the boat or a few weeks depending on how quickly we can process the paperwork with the donor and have the boat removed, as in the case when it is processed through the mail.

Who benefits from the donation?

Family Empowerment Centers is the benefiting non-profit organization. For more information on them click here.

What is the actual tax savings?

The donation of a vehicle works much the same way as a regular cash contribution on your tax filings. The savings you as the donor will have varies depending on your tax liabilities, gross income, taxes paid during the year, etc... We always suggest that you check with your accountant to determine your personal tax savings and benefit.

I need my boat picked up immediately is that possible?

Every situation is a little bit different and we address each situation uniquely. Call us at our 888-951-Boat number and we can give you our best estimate on how quickly we can move the boat. Remember when you call Donate Your Boat you are not calling random operator. You are calling one of our local representatives or the Director of the program.

What about my slip fees or storage fees?

Once the donation is accepted by Donate Your Boat and we receive the “Acknowledgment of Donation Form” and the transfer of ownership title or registration we assume full responsibility of the boat from that point forward. Unfortunately we cannot assume the liability of past boat expenses that were incurred by you.

What if I still owe money on my boat or have a lien?

Depending on the value of the boat vs. the amount of the lien we can still receive a boat as long as we as the charity will not lose money on the sale of the boat. These situations take special care and may take longer to process.

What if my boat is of greater value and I only want to donate a portion of the proceeds?

In these situations we would do what is considered a “Bargain Sale” in which we would handle the donation process the same way. The only difference is we would come to a formal agreement regarding what percentage of the boats value you would want to receive vs. what percentage would be donated. In most cases we can do bargain sales for up to 25% of a boats value. Your 1098-C form would then show the “Sale Price” of the boat as well as any compensation you received for the boat. The donation value then is equal to the “Sale Price” – “Compensation Amount.”

Past Boat Donations

Power Boats 25’ and Over

Our experience with boats of 25’ and greater gives us an edge in the donate your boat market as many agencies cannot handle boats of this size without placing a burden on you the donor to maintain storage contracts with the marinas where these boats are located or requiring that they sit on trailers.  If you have a larger boat to donate we have the expertise to handle it and will make the process of donating your boat as simple for you as possible.

Power Boats 24’ and Under

Whether your boat is a bow rider, pontoon boat, deck boat, cuddy cabin, center console, or fishing boat we can make the donation process simple and efficient for you the donor.   These boats are often most easily obtained when they are sitting on a trailer but our agency is not limited in our ability to receive boats based on if a trailer is included which is just another way our agency sets itself apart in the donate your boat market.

Although sailboats come with more complexities to obtain due in large part to the transportation and storage of these vessels, we have handled a large variety of sailboats of varying sizes with great success.  You will see by the sailboats in the slideshow that we have had our share of larger sailboats, but don’t let that fool you as we have handled many smaller sailboats as well.

Other Boats and Vehicles

In addition to larger power boats and sailboats we can also handle smaller boats and other vehicles.  We have had our share of wave runners, jet skis, paddle boats, row boats, sunfish sailboats, and small fishing boats.  However, we have also received many cars, vans and trucks.  We are also able to receive RV’s, motorcycles, and all terrain vehicles.  Believe it or not we even received a shrimp boat a few years back.  So if you are unsure if we can handle your boat or vehicle gives us a call and we will let you know.
